Nomura's IWM Business Makes Senior Hire

The Japan-headquartered group continues to build out with a number of senior appointments.

Nomura’s international wealth management arm has appointed Ong Kin Yok as managing director and team head to focus on market coverage for Singapore and Malaysia.

Ong, who will be based in Singapore, will report directly to Philip Kunz, according to a Nomura memo seen by this news service. The memo was signed by Philip Kunz, senior advisor and group head, Southeast Asia, and Anurag Mahesh, head of coverage for Southeast Asia, global South Asia and Middle East

With more than a quarter of a century of private banking experience, Ong was most recently desk head for Malaysia and Singapore at HSBC Global Private Banking where he led a team of relationship managers to service clients in both markets. Prior to that, Ong worked at UBS as senior client partner of the global family office for the UHNW clients’ area. He has also worked at UBS, including as deputy head of portfolio management and investment solutions and project manager for management services and controls. In his early career, Ong worked at DBS Bank. 

Ong holds an MSc (wealth management) from the University of Rochester (Simon Business School), a master of advanced studies (finance) from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and a BSc in finance (honors) from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, US.

In January, a former chief operating officer at the private bank of Deutsche Bank, Sudhir Nemali, joined Nomura’s international wealth arm in the COO and managing director position. He is based in Singapore.

In August 2024, this news service reported that former senior HSBC figure Philip Kunz joined Nomura International Wealth Management as managing director – senior advisor and group head, Southeast Asia, based in Singapore. In July 2023, Nomura expanded its international wealth arm by taking up residence in the Dubai International Financial Centre.
