Citigroup Names Economic Analysis Head In Asia's Wealth Arm

The new appointee, who has served in other senior economics roles at Citigroup, previously worked at ANZ and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

Citigroup has appointed Li-Gang Liu as Asia-Pacific head of economic analysis for Citi Global Wealth Management (CGWM). 

Still based in Hong Kong, he reports to Steven Wieting, chief investment strategist and chief economist for CGWM, and Roger Bacon, Asia-Pacific head of CGWM APAC Ultra High Net Worth Business, the US-based banking group said in a statement. 

Li-Gang Liu will be responsible for providing thought leadership and policy analysis of the region’s key economies, adding to CGWM’S analysis of China’s economy and future relations with the world. He will lead senior-level discussions with the region’s most sophisticated investors to assist them in making strategic investment decisions.

Prior to this role, Li-Gang Liu was Citi Research’s chief economist for China from 2016. He has more than two decades of professional experience working in both public and private financial institutions. He was ANZ Bank’s chief economist for Greater China for more than six years. Prior to ANZ, he served in various senior research roles at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo, and the World Bank and Peterson Institute for International Economics, both in Washington DC.

Li-Gang Liu enrolled in the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing for two years before earning a scholarship to study in the US. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as a Master’s and PhD degree in economics from Johns Hopkins University.
