The 24th annual edition of the Forbes 400, which came out last week, showed the usual suspects topping the list of America’s most wealthy. Bill Gates, Micosoft’s co-founder and chairman, was the wealthiest person in the US for the 11th straight year with a net worth of $51 billion.
He was followed again by Berkshire Hathaway’s chairman and chief executive Warren Buffett's $40 billion.
The most notable change this year is the rise in the rankings of the Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who were ranked 16th by Forbes with $11 billion each, up from 43rd place last year when they each had a net worth of $4 billion.
And Mr Brin's and Mr Page's post-IPO wealth is accruing at speeds faster than Gates' wealth after Microsoft went public, said Forbes.
Collectively, the top 10 richest Americans saw their total net worth climb $125 billion, the magazine said. The lowest members of the list each had a net worth of $900 million.
The collective net worth of the US climbed $125 billion, to $1.13 trillion, according to Forbes.
