There has been a significant rise in the demand from investors for global macro hedge fund managers in the first quarter 2006, according to the latest Tara Capital hedge fund strategy barometer.

In contrast, demand for long/short equity strategies appear to be waning.

The eleventh HFSB shows that a record 63 per cent of respondents are planning to raise their exposure to global macro strategies, with not one respondent saying that they plan to exit the strategy in the near future.

But the European Equity strategy polled its lowest ever score, with only 26 per cent of investors planning to raise their holdings.

Emerging Market managers are also experiencing an increase in demand, with 41 per cent of respondents planning to increase their allocations to emerging market hedge funds.

“Increasingly investors are looking to Emerging Market managers who actively hedge their exposures since some profit taking can be expected following the strong rally over the last three years for these markets,“ said Cyril Delamare, managing director of Tara Capital, in a statement.

After a torrid year, convertible arbitrage strategies appear to be finally coming back in favour, with almost one fifth of respondents now planning to increase their exposure to the strategy. This is in sharp contrast to the last HFSB when not one investor was willing to commit a new allocation to the area.

Tara Capital is hosting two high level seminars on investing. Entitled Activism, Emerging Markets, Asset-back…Where is the Smart Money Going?, the seminars will feature top investment experts, including:

Philippa Malmgren, Ex-Advisor to the White House, Canonbury Group.
Florian Homm, Founder and CIO of Absolute Capital Management.
Bharat Shah, Principal shareholder and CEO of ASKRJ Mumbai.
Amaury Junior, Founding Partner and CIO of Capitania Asset Management.
John Lowry, Founder and CEO of TARA Capital.

The seminars will be held in London on 5 April and Geneva on 7 April.

The London seminar will be at Cafe Royal beginning at 4:30 pm, and the Geneva seminar at the Swissôtel Metropole starting at 11:30 with a buffet lunch.
