With talent management remaining a crucial business development field for wealth and fund managers in Asia, as in other regions, new analysis has identified what are the best schools to attend in Australia to break into asset management.

A report by eVestment drew on data from over 36,000 active professionals, from over4,500 asset management firms representing over1,000 universities and colleges globally. eVestment has also issued reports on the European and US sectors. For example, it found that out of the top 20 US colleges and universities, the University of Pennsylvania came at the top.

This publication, meanwhile, aims to keep a regular track of post-graduate and MBA programmes relevant to the global wealth management industry. To view the latest item, click here.

As far as Australia is concerned, the top 10 schools placing talent in the investment asset management field, according to the report, are:

1.      University of New South Wales;
2.      University of Sydney;
3.      Macquarie University;
4.      University of Melbourne;
5.      Monash University;
6.      University of Technology, Sydney;
7.      University of Queensland;
8.      Australian National University;
9.      University of Western Australia;
10.     Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

The report also ranks schools by a variety of criteria, including rankings by various degrees and positions within investment asset management firms.

Among other details, the report found that Australian university graduates have extensive alumni networks in universities and asset management firms abroad. Some 16.1 per cent of Australian university educated individuals reported studying at other institutions internationally and 55.7 per cent of the group found employment in the asset management space abroad.

Universities in Sydney and Melbourne were the best represented schools within the asset management industry.

Amongst Australian-university educated asset management professionals, the CFA charter is more popular than an MBA. The eVestment database found that 70 per cent of Australian-university educated professionals hold CFA charters compared to 31.7 per cent who hold MBAs.
